Airspace change in Ayrshire!

Controlled Airspace Re-established Over Prestwick Area.

Controlled airspace has been re-established in the Prestwick area following the steep increase in flights at Prestwick International Airport. The new Class D Control Zone (CTR) and Control Area (CTA) was introduced on 30th October 2003. Its approval by the Civil Aviation Authority follows a review of local airspace arrangements and consultation with the aviation community.

In addition, the base of the Scottish Terminal Control Area (TMA) in the Kilmarnock area has been revised. Controlled airspace previously existed around Prestwick, but a decline in air traffic activity at the airport led to its withdrawal in the mid 90s.

Details of the changes have been published in Aeronautical Information Circular (AIC) 84/2003 (Yellow 112) (PDF)

For more information please visit the news section on the CAA website and also check the publications (AICs) issued by NATS.

Pilots should note that 1:250000 Aeronautical Chart ‘The Borders' (Sheet 4) Edition 4 will be re-published on 30th October 2003 to incorporate the Prestwick changes. However, the changes will be incorporated into 1:250000 chart 'N.Ireland' (Sheet 3) Edition 3, 1:500000 Aeronautical Charts 'Scotland' (Sheet 2150ABCD) Edition 22, and 'Northern England and Northern Ireland' (Sheet 2171AB) Edition 26 at a later date.
